freshman spring

freshman spring Is it already the seventh week of the semester? To be honest, Ive been chugging work from such a consistent, ever-so-slightly-bulging firehose for so long that this fact surprises me. Its almost like I hadnt noticed the time go by, which isnt entirely true: I guess what I mean to say is that Ive never really been able to take a break yet this semester. A true break. A break where, after the fourth midterm youve taken in two days, you celebrate by declaring the night off from work, and you wont have a new pile of things to do waiting the next morning as a consequence. Spring break please come soon. Id also like to opine that although MIT is indubitably hard, much of the difficulty is self-prescribed: it is often the case that students here take on more classes, more committments, more work than is expected of them. There are always exceptional people here, people that I admire and deeply respect, yet I always have to remind myself that MIT isnt a race, and there isnt anything wrong with going at your own pace, and that its okay to slow down when the burden becomes infeasibly heavy. I keep these thoughts close to my heart more than ever lately: I tread a very fine line. My committments, classes, psets, and essays are modeled as drived sinusoidal inputs throughout the week in the differential equation, the system that is my life, and I am oh so critically damped, in danger of tilting towards instability at any moment. Or, I suppose, towards an overdamped stability, if youre a glass-half-full kind of person. (Unpopular opinion: 18.03, Differential Equations, is an interesting class and I think its a really useful class to take.) Speaking of classes, have a schedule: 6.01 (Intro to EECS via Robot Sensing) is an amazing class! The labs are extremely fun: last week we used potentiometers, op-amps, and other components to make a robot car move forward, move backward, and turn using a breadboard as a remote control. A few weeks ago, we created LEGOLANCE, PRINCE OF MIRKWOOD by attaching a Lego lance to the front of the car and successfully won a joust against a bulls-eye target that never stood a chance. The midterms are challenging, and the class certainly isnt easy, but the staff is extremely supportive and office hours are frequent and rewarding. breadboarding is cool~ 6.042 (Math for Computer Science) is a really interesting class. I guess the closest synonym for it is discrete math: topics include proofs, cardinality, set theory, graph theory, number theory, probability, and random variables. This semester, 6.042 is in TEAL format, which for 6.042 means that there are no formal lectures and class time is entirely devoted to solving problems on whiteboards with a group ot 5-7 other people. Ill admit that I wasnt really into the format at first: I much prefer note-taking, lecture-style classes. But this class has grown on me, and the material that 6.042 teaches critical thinking, proofs, logic, reasoning is actually quite suited for TEAL. 8.02 (Electricity and Magnetism) is a GIR, and although I like the physics, its also really hard and Im kind of bad at it. :( Gauss law is nice. 18.03 (Differential Equations) might as well be 18.06 with all the linear algebra weve been doing: in fact, the title of our last lecture was literally Introduction to Linear Algebra. shrug  Seriously though, its a good class, although this statement is kind of debated among my friends. Complex numbers are pretty. 24.900 (Intro to Linguistics) Oh my god linguistics is SO COOL. I could probably go on for hours about it. Did you know that English has about 14 different vowels and only five ways to express them? Did you also know that the upside-down e symbol that you see sometimes in online dictionaries for pronunciations is called a schwa? I sure didnt before taking this class. Also, we had to learn most of the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) for a quiz last week, and that was kind of brutal and also really interesting at the same time. Maybe one day, Ill write a blog post exclusively in IPA. Maybe that would be silly. (im uh also not sure if people would let me do that _ i would love to though!) Related to linguistics, I recently started a UROP that has to do with the rhythm of speech. I might have a more detailed blog post about the results of this project a month or two down the road~ Im currently finishing up beginner archery, and will start intermediate archery soon. Similar to pistol, which I took last semester, archery is a really good activity for meditation. I get to aim at one simple thing, the bulls-eye, and get to ignore everything else, which lately is something thats hard to come by. I also did a hall exchange with my friend Jessica T. 20 from Next House for a week some time ago: well be doing a co-blog post thingy about it down the road when were not hosed. Saint Sebastian Interceding For The Plague Stricken

The artwork that I would like to discuss is Saint Sebastian Interceding for the Plague Stricken, an oil painting done in the 1490s by Josse Lieferinxe a South Netherlands artist. (Saint Sebastian Interceding for the Plague Stricken.) I went to the Walter Art Museum and this image hidden it was in the third floor in the corner. As for the comparison I decided to choose the right, Saint Sebastian and the Bishop Saint, and for the third artwork that we had discussed in class that I’d like to discuss is the Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch. The main image is Saint Sebastian Interceding for the Plague Stricken. However what these artworks have in common is that they have a lot of movement and have the same religion. Also each artwork conveys different the messages and they have a different function. First when I saw the Saint Sebastian Interceding for the Plague Stricken I immediately knew it that the painting had to do with the Black Death. The Black Death is widely known even today because so many people were infected and it’s a major part of history. I remember seeing it in movies, history and documentary channels. The plague killed nearly one-third population of Europe. (The Black Death: The Greatest Catastrophe Ever.) Another thing I already knew was in the painting Christians were experiencing and witnessing sudden death because of the Black Death. Thetis - More than Achilless Mom

Thetis was the nymph and water goddess who was the mother to the Trojan War hero Achilles. But she was more than just some guys mom. Background Thetis  was the leader of the 50 Nereids, sea nymph daughters of Nereus, an aquatic shapeshifter famous for giving Hercules information about his labors, and Doris, the fertility of the ocean. Nereus was the son of Gaia, the earth, and Pontos, the ocean, and Doris was the daughter of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys, also watery deities. She would not have been the mother of Achilles if things had gone differently, though. At one point, the king of the gods, Zeus, tried wooing Thetis. However, a prophecy saying that the son would be greater than the father made Zeus give up. After all, he didnt want a repeat of what happened with his own dad. As Prometheus prophesied in Aeschyluss play,  Prometheus Bound, the god†¦ †¦plans a marriage that shall hurl him into oblivion from his sovereignty and throne; and then immediately the curse his father Cronus invoked as he fell from his ancient throne, shall be fulfilled to the uttermost. Zeus averted the prophecy by marrying Thetis off to another man. Marriage Thetis married a mortal king,  Peleus, at the command of Zeus. It was at this wedding that Eris, goddess of discord, tossed an apple for the most beautiful goddess into the crowd, which kicked off the events precipitating the Trojan War. The bride and groom produced a son, Achilles. Thetis tried to make her infant son immortal by dipping him into the River Styx in the Underworld, holding him by the ankle, according to tradition. This made him invulnerable, for one weak spot, the achilles heel, where Thetis held him. Peleus disagreed with such risky treatment, and Thetis left him. Iliad Thetis shows up again in Homers Iliad, where she offers to get Achilles a new, better suit of armor and shield from the blacksmith of the gods, Hephaestus. Hephaestus was in her debt because Thetis and her sisters had cared for him when Hera threw him down from Olympus: But silver-shod Thetis the daughter of Nereus took and cared for him with her sisters. As the show progressed, it became clear how much media influenced Truman’s life, and also how Christof played a huge role in Truman’s well-being. First, the influence of media affects our lives in many ways. As The Truman Show ran 24/7, there were no commercials. Therefore, the show had to generate an income by advertising products to the viewers. For example, when Truman’s wife showed off her recent purchase, a Chef Pal, she listed many unique characteristics about the product, hoping some of the millions of viewers would purchase it. This shows how much commercials and advertising can persuade us to purchase a product. Without even realizing it, TV viewing can influence people’s purchases. Second, a form of media displayed in the show can be described as broadcast media. The Truman Show was broadcasted all over the world and millions of people were watching it. You could see this because during the movie people were shown watching the show in various places. For example, there was a man watching TV while in his bathtub and two security guards enjoyed the show while on patrol. This shows how TV can be addictive, and possibly interfere with our ability to complete everyday tasks. Finally, Truman was basically living in an artificial world. Everything was planned, and the actors were well educated to make Truman believe everything about his life existed in Seahaven. This shows how people can be influenced to believe that something is real or true but in reality it is not. He had a wife who did not love him, a teacher who did not support what he was trying to go after, and a friend who did not actually mean what he said. Truman was influenced by the world and people around him, making him believe everything was normal and not planned out. The world Truman was born into would not have been the way it was without the help of Christof, the show’s producer. Everything in Seahaven was operated by machines and computers. These computers were basically controlled my Christof’s orders. Early in his life, Truman was traumatized by his father’s death at sea. He grew up thinking it was his fault. Because of Christof’s planning of the death, Truman was always scared of water. The only way off of Seahaven was by boat, therefore Christof knew he would be able to keep Truman under his control. Christof also did a good job of increasing his audience numbers. When viewers saw the heart-felt moment of Truman reuniting with his father years later, the number of viewers increased. Christof made the scene stand out by changing camera angles and playing background music. In addition, since Truman wanted to make his way to Fiji, Christof strategically planned different events in order to slow Truman down so he wouldn’t leave the island. An example of this is when Truman went to purchase a plane ticket, but the flights were all sold out for over a month. Also, when the bus he was going to ride broke down. This proves that Christof manipulated Truman for his own purpose. Christof controlled everything in Truman’s life from the weather to who Truman was going to spend his life with. All these points prove how Truman was being used for Christof’s benefit; to increase the show’s ratings and to gain an income. The storyline of The Truman Show shows us how media affects our lives in many different ways. From something as simple as watching a reality TV show like Survivor to using 5000 cameras to produce a movie. Truman grows up with his world, friends, and even family all being a lie. Christof is the one who did this to Truman. When publicity and fortune become more important than what is right, some people may not realize that what they are doing to others may be harming them. When an opportunity arises, it is sometimes all about what will benefit them.
