Thetis - More than Achilless Mom
Thetis was the nymph and water goddess who was the mother to the Trojan War hero Achilles. But she was more than just some guys mom. Background Thetisà was the leader of the 50 Nereids, sea nymph daughters of Nereus, an aquatic shapeshifter famous for giving Hercules information about his labors, and Doris, the fertility of the ocean. Nereus was the son of Gaia, the earth, and Pontos, the ocean, and Doris was the daughter of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys, also watery deities. She would not have been the mother of Achilles if things had gone differently, though. At one point, the king of the gods, Zeus, tried wooing Thetis. However, a prophecy saying that the son would be greater than the father made Zeus give up. After all, he didnt want a repeat of what happened with his own dad. Zeus averted the prophecy by marrying Thetis off to another man. Marriage Thetis married a mortal king,à Peleus, at the command of Zeus. It was at this wedding that Eris, goddess of discord, tossed an apple for the most beautiful goddess into the crowd, which kicked off the events precipitating the Trojan War. The bride and groom produced a son, Achilles. Thetis tried to make her infant son immortal by dipping him into the River Styx in the Underworld, holding him by the ankle, according to tradition. This made him invulnerable, for one weak spot, the achilles heel, where Thetis held him. Peleus disagreed with such risky treatment, and Thetis left him. Iliad Thetis shows up again in Homers Iliad, where she offers to get Achilles a new, better suit of armor and shield from the blacksmith of the gods, Hephaestus. Hephaestus was in her debt because Thetis and her sisters had cared for him when Hera threw him down from Olympus: But silver-shod Thetis the daughter of Nereus took and cared for him with her sisters. First, the influence of media affects our lives in many ways. As The Truman Show ran 24/7, there were no commercials. Therefore, the show had to generate an income by advertising products to the viewers. For example, when Trumanââ¬â¢s wife showed off her recent purchase, a Chef Pal, she listed many unique characteristics about the product, hoping some of the millions of viewers would purchase it. This shows how much commercials and advertising can persuade us to purchase a product. Without even realizing it, TV viewing can influence peopleââ¬â¢s purchases. Second, a form of media displayed in the show can be described as broadcast media. The Truman Show was broadcasted all over the world and millions of people were watching it. You could see this because during the movie people were shown watching the show in various places. For example, there was a man watching TV while in his bathtub and two security guards enjoyed the show while on patrol. This shows how TV can be addictive, and possibly interfere with our ability to complete everyday tasks. Finally, Truman was basically living in an artificial world. Everything was planned, and the actors were well educated to make Truman believe everything about his life existed in Seahaven. This shows how people can be influenced to believe that something is real or true but in reality it is not. He had a wife who did not love him, a teacher who did not support what he was trying to go after, and a friend who did not actually mean what he said. Truman was influenced by the world and people around him, making him believe everything was normal and not planned out. The world Truman was born into would not have been the way it was without the help of Christof, the showââ¬â¢s producer. Everything in Seahaven was operated by machines and computers. These computers were basically controlled my Christofââ¬â¢s orders. Early in his life, Truman was traumatized by his fatherââ¬â¢s death at sea. He grew up thinking it was his fault. Because of Christofââ¬â¢s planning of the death, Truman was always scared of water. The only way off of Seahaven was by boat, therefore Christof knew he would be able to keep Truman under his control. Christof also did a good job of increasing his audience numbers. When viewers saw the heart-felt moment of Truman reuniting with his father years later, the number of viewers increased. Christof made the scene stand out by changing camera angles and playing background music. In addition, since Truman wanted to make his way to Fiji, Christof strategically planned different events in order to slow Truman down so he wouldnââ¬â¢t leave the island. An example of this is when Truman went to purchase a plane ticket, but the flights were all sold out for over a month. Also, when the bus he was going to ride broke down. This proves that Christof manipulated Truman for his own purpose. Christof controlled everything in Trumanââ¬â¢s life from the weather to who Truman was going to spend his life with. All these points prove how Truman was being used for Christofââ¬â¢s benefit; to increase the showââ¬â¢s ratings and to gain an income. The storyline of The Truman Show shows us how media affects our lives in many different ways. From something as simple as watching a reality TV show like Survivor to using 5000 cameras to produce a movie. Truman grows up with his world, friends, and even family all being a lie. Christof is the one who did this to Truman. When publicity and fortune become more important than what is right, some people may not realize that what they are doing to others may be harming them. When an opportunity arises, it is sometimes all about what will benefit them. The problem, however, is that the present system of education has not only discouraged the adults from attending universities but it also has de-motivated them to learn because of its emphasis on linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence to the neglect of the six other intelligence. The purpose of this case study is to prove that the application of Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences in the Andragogy can be a source of motivation for the adult learners to go back to universities. This case study presumes that adult learners already know the importance of education. With the wealth of experience, they bring to the classroom, they know how important education is to their personal development and professional advancement. The present system of education, however, has not encouraged them to learn. The learning styles and strategies adopted in most educational institutions are only geared towards measuring linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence. In this situation, learners who are naturally gifted in these two bits of intelligence will naturally perform well in class. Consequently, these students are the ones who excel academically. Adult learners who are naturally gifted in one of the six other bits of intelligence will perform poorly in school. It i s as if the educational system is denying education to these other adult learners. Thus, to motivate adult learners, there have to be changed in the learning strategies of teachers to allow adult learners to develop the six other bits of intelligence. Thus, Gardner stressed the need to develop all the eight bits of intelligence. Gardners theory will be applied to the following setting: there are around 35 students in one classroom; they are all adults who wish to finish their college education; some are single mothers who are between 30-35 years of age who are working for promotional and career advancement; some are single who are presently in experiencing financial difficulties, some are experiencing problems in their relationship with their loved ones, some are retired government employees who only wish to learn and experience finishing his education; some enrolled for want to meet new friends; some desire to finish their college education to be promoted; The school environment which embraces the difference in the method and manner of learning between adults and children designs various techniques by which adults could be motivated to learn. This educational institution is geared towards developing the eight bits of intelligence which Gardner argued that we all have. It is also committed to ensuring that the educational institution will adopt a particular kind of learning environment that will motivate the adults to learn by enhancing the reason for learning and by decreasing the obstacles to learning. Concentrating on the two bits of intelligence will motivate those adult learners who are predominantly linguistic or predominantly logical-mathematical in intelligence. At the same time, this will also de-motivate and discourage those who are predominant on other intelligence. Teachers must also realize that one of the differences between adult learners and children learners is that the former brings to the classroom a wide array of experience they often would want to share with the other adult learners. Teachers must take precaution that the discussion is not controlled by the adult learners. Teachers must also realize that the adults want to know how the lessons being learned in school could be applied in their everyday lives. They lose interest when they are made to attend classes without the teacher explaining the relevance of the topic to their personal or their professional lives. Thus, the teaching style should be adopted to suit the needs of every adult learner. The teachers must bear in mind the following key principles of adult learning: motivation; reinforcement; retention; transference. (Stephen Lieb) In order to ensure that the adult learners are actually motivated to learn, the teachers must, right at the very beginning of class, establish a friendly and open atmosphere showing that he is willing to teach the adult learners. Reinforcement happens when the teacher acknowledges positive behavior from the students or when the teacher informs the adult learners when their response to a particular situation is not proper. Learning happens when the adult learners actually retain the information they gained in class. Transference is the transfer of learning that adult learners were taught in class. It could be positive transference in the sense of applying the principles they learned or negative transference in the sense of not applying what they are told not to do. Observer The observers task is mere to make a record of the behavior of the adult learners before and after this case study is applied. Emphasis must be made on the response of the students to the activities performed in class. Facilitator The task of the facilitator is to ensure that the tasks and activities are properly performed by each adult learner. His task is to ensure that the adult learners actually learn from the activities. The teacher must also act as a facilitator once in a while. The facilitator must also coordinate with the teacher in choosing the right kind of activities for the adult learners. Goals The specific goals of this case study are the following: a) to gain a better understanding of adult learning; b) to prove that life is a journey of continuous learning. Learning is a continuous process which applies to all persons regardless of age; c) to develop different strategies for teaching adult learners; d) to prove that it is possible for adult learners to be motivated to study by enhancing the reason for learning and decreasing the obstacles to learning; e) to eliminate the barriers to learning such as lack of time, money, lack of interest, lack of confidence and responsibilities at home and at work. Reasonable Timeline The application of Gardners Theory require the development of all the eight bits of intelligence, consequently, there must be enough time for the teacher to apply all teaching strategies in the development of the 8 bits of intelligence. There is no specific timeframe involved because this will depend on the pace of each student. Realistic The application of Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligence in the field of adult learning is realistic. Though his theory has not yet been accepted by psychologists, educators have responded positively to this theory. At present, the theory has been embraced by educational theorists and applied by teachers as a solution to the problems of schooling. Attainable The purpose of the case study is also attainable considering that it is very realistic and there is enough time for the teacher to apply all his teaching strategies. At first, it may appear difficult considering that educators are already having problems teaching just one kind of intelligence. Educators will eventually have a more difficult time teaching all eight bits of intelligence. However, I believe that in the long run, it will be to the advantage of the teachers in the sense that they will have eight additional strategies by which they could teach adult learners. Objectives/Expectations I expect that the majority of the students, if not all, will be able to appreciate and fully comprehend Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences and that activity designed to the development of all the eight bits of intelligence will help motivate the students to go to school. This case study also seeks to encourage the academic institutions who until now are still applying the traditional methods of learning to adopt Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Expected Outcomes I believe that the outcome will be positive and the two objectives of this case study will be attained. Firstly, we will see a significant improvement in the behavior of adult learners manifesting that they have been actually motivated and have learned something. Secondly, we will also see a distinct improvement in the way teachers and the educational institutions handle teaching. Lastly, adults are not concerned with the content-based instruction instead, they want the teaching strategy to be problem-centered. Conclusions and Recommendations The application of Gardners theory in the field of adult learning is very promising but it is still in its infancy stage. Educators and educational institutions are yet to completely realize how effective it is in motivating adult learners. A Fear of Flying Turning a Simple Dream into a Story of Triumph Have you ever had a dream that you could fly? When I was a child, I had recurring lucid flying dreams. In one, my parents are entertaining company. I start demonstrating how I can fly. Iââ¬â¢m riding the airwaves above the yellow shag rug in the living room, and everyone is entranced. In the dream, flying is the most natural thing in the world and I know that anyone can do it if they just learn to catch the right currents. Watch me go! Itââ¬â¢s just like swimming! Then, I would awake. from thecharmingplace.com greeting cards The thrill of flying came crashing down. I was left distraught, wishing I had never had the dream at all. In my childââ¬â¢s mind, it was worse to discover that my ecstasy was imagined than to avoid it in the first place. So I decided I would prefer NOT flying in my dreams to the trauma and disappointment I faced upon awakening. I resolved to wake myself up the next time I had a flying dream. Reality Check Sure enough, one night I found myself flying around with the characters from Alice in Wonderland, cards and spades whisking through the air. I promptly gave myself a whack on the head with my right hand and woke up immediately. The dream was over. No more disappointing awakenings to ââ¬Å"realityâ⬠for me! That was the last flying dream I ever had. Until last Thursday. Reclamation In my dream, I once again have an audience, and I am doing swimming strokes through the air. I feel the support of the air under me, and I stay airborne for minutes at a time. What power and freedom! I want everyone around me to discover this joy! This time I choose to let the dream take its natural course. And when I wake up, there is no trauma or disappointment. Rather, I experience an aliveness from the knowledge that I have reclaimed something. Whatââ¬â¢s possible from here? Rising above my limiting beliefs. A different perspective on life. I used to have tidal wave dreams that were more like nightmares but once, I saw that wave coming towards me, and thought, Here goes and dove straight into it. My flying dreams have slowed down with age though occasionally, I get similar ones where I discover, to my delight, that I can run as fast as a deer.
